“There’s no place like home.”

-L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

I chose The Wizard of Oz (1939) as my first post just because it is such a timeless movie and one of my favorites. This movie was not just a stepping stone to film but it had such a deep connotation. For me I was able to relate to all the characters like Scarecrow’s loyalty and witty intellect, Tinman’s emotional yet nervous nature, and Lion’s confidence to be able to fight or flee a situation. Growing up I never really knew how to be me, I would simply just mimic what everyone else was doing at the time. So in essence Dorothy too wants to find herself, not just be taken for granted or having to put up with Aunt Em and everyone’s demands.

Okay can we just take a minute and appreciate everything from musicality, hair/makeup, outfits, to transitions like when Glenda appears in Munchkin Land to find Dorothy it was just a moment of WOW! the fact she appeared in thin air from a bubble was the most magical thing. Of course the revolutionary switch to technicolor was just beautiful too bad she had to get concussed to find that Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

There always has to be a good and bad in movies right? The Wicked Witch of The East shows up, a victim from a family murder, she feels like its her right to own the shoes her late sister was wearing. I mean that’s why you should write a Will, but that’s none of my business.

I knew from then on she was determined to finish her quest to find the Wizard so she can go home. While walking the Yellow Brick Road and after meeting the gang, she gets kidnapped by the Wicked Witch of the West. Man, I bet her feet were hurting. Her friends save her because they are her ride or die, like literally they almost did. Luckily the Witch died by just some accidently thrown water but we love “happy accidents” right. In the end they rescue Dorothy and finally was able to see the Wizard in Emerald City, and low and behold a normal person like you or me. I am assuming she finally has a epiphany of “I love my home and I shouldn’t take that for granted. I can make it my own. ” So after a lot of singing and walking, she ends up going back home right with the help of those slippers. The fact that the characters in her comatose state were all the same as the ones in her real world gives such insight of how when we dream we still have some sense of reality. In that being said who was Glenda portraying possibly Dorothy’s Mom? In the end, YES, a definite must watch!
